The short version
The short answer
Shopify's built-in banner is free and works with apps and pixels that use Shopify's customer privacy settings. It doesn't know about scripts pasted into your theme, and it doesn't show you what fired afterwards. If you've added Tag Manager or a pixel by hand, or you want proof your tracking works, TagSentry fills those gaps.
Where Shopify's banner is better
- It's free and already there. No code, no account.
- Checkout. Shopify's checkout pages don't run theme code, so our line doesn't load there. Shopify's own settings cover checkout.
- Apps talk to it. Apps and customer-events pixels that follow Shopify's privacy settings read its choice directly. Our Shopify app, which connects TagSentry to those settings, is built but not published yet.
Where TagSentry is better
- Scripts in your theme. Tag Manager, a Meta Pixel or Hotjar pasted into
theme.liquiddon't read Shopify's banner. TagSentry sets Google's consent defaults before they run and holds the trackers our scan finds until visitors agree. - Rules for each region. Ask first in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Brazil, Quebec and more. Opt-out rules in California and other US states, with a privacy signal (GPC) honoured where required.
- A record. Every decision is stored for 24 months, searchable by consent ID, with no IP address or user agent kept.
- Monitoring. See
purchaseandadd_to_cartfiring, the tags each triggered, and get one email if one stops.
Price, side by side
| Shopify's banner | TagSentry | |
|---|---|---|
| Consent | Included | Free to 5,000 decisions a month, then from $9 |
| Theme scripts held | No | Yes, the ones our scan finds |
| Tag monitoring | No | Free to 250,000 events, then from $19 |
Switching
- Scan your store free to see whether your banner stops your trackers.
- Create a site and copy its one line.
- In Shopify, open Online Store, then Themes, then Edit code, then
theme.liquid. - Paste the line right after
<head>, above your Tag Manager code. - Turn off Shopify's own banner, so visitors don't see two.
Pixels added through Shopify's customer events or apps won't read TagSentry's choice until our Shopify app ships. If you rely on them in the EU, check with us before you switch.
Questions
Will this cover my checkout?
No. Shopify doesn't run theme code on checkout. Visitors usually answer the banner on your storefront before they get there.
Do I need a developer?
No. It's one paste in theme.liquid. If you're unsure, ask Claude to walk you through it with our setup guide.
